FIRST WORD @ BEDROOM BAR

by First Word on August 28, 2012

We are delighted to launch our brand new residency at one of our favourite venues in London, the fantastic Bedroom Bar. To celebrate we’ve put together a stellar line-up, starting with a brand new signing to FW, the incredible Yungun aka Essa. A stalwart of the UK Hip Hop scene, he’s gigged with everyone from De La Soul to KRS-One building a solid fanbase for both his incendiary live shows and his thoughtful, intelligent lyricism. His two albums ‘The Essance’ and ‘Grown Man Business’ cemented his reputation and his partnership with the dopest DJ on the planet, Mr Thing has guaranteed that every show is a smash. He’ll be debuting new material from his soon-come EP on First Word, followed by what’s sure to be yet another floor-filling DJ set from self confessed ‘Champion Nerd’ Mr Thing.

Rounding out the line-up are two of the hottest rising female vocalists in the UK in the shape of LeaLea Jones and Ruby Wood. As lead singer for the highly acclaimed Submotion Orchestra Ruby has become one of the most in-demand vocalists around. Her ethereal yet powerful vocals for SubMo drew the attention of NInja Tune’s Bonobo, who invited her to join his live band for tours of Europe and the UK. We’re delighted to have her at Bedroom Bar, where she’ll be debuting some of the material she’s been working on for her solo project. An intimate, acoustic show, make sure you’re in early for this one. LeaLea Jones released her debut single on FW a few months ago, a collaboration with her regular producer Jack Baker (Bonobo / Alice Russell) and reggae legend Horace Andy. Her fearless vocal style mixed with Jack’s sparse, percussive production has one fans across the globe. Holding down the decks in between all that will be FW label boss Gilla, dropping hip hop, soul, beats, reggae and all points in between. Check out his Excursions Radio show to hear more. We’re also delighted to be joined by our good friends at Hop Skip Jump playing a selection of soulful, electronic music. Expect House, Disco, Italo, Detroit, Hip Hop, and all of those jams you love!

It’s only £5 in advance (£7 on the door), and runs from 9pm til 3am – check out the facebook event here for more info.
